Why Medical Grade Glove?

Medical gloves play an important role in protecting the wearer and/or the patient from the spread of infection or illness during medical procedures and examinations. Medical gloves are one part of an infection-control strategy.

Medical gloves are recommended to be worn for two main reasons:

  • To reduce the risk of contamination of health-care workers hands with blood and other body fluids.
  • To reduce the risk of germ dissemination to the environment and of transmission from the health-care worker to the patient and vice versa, as well as from one patient to another.

Does Any Disposable Glove = Medical Rated Glove? No.

Only some disposable gloves qualify as medical gloves. To fit the medical-grade description, disposable gloves must meet the FDA standards. All medical rated gloves are regulated by the FDA and require a 510(k) premarket notification. The FDA guidelines ensure all gloves used in medical settings are durable and reliable, not flimsy or brittle. For patient examinations, gloves must have an acceptable quality level (AQL) no higher than 2.5. That rating means no more than 2.5% of the gloves in a batch can have defects. These gloves are non-sterile - sterile gloves must have an even lower AQL measure.

Manufacturers have to keep up with stringent testing measures to achieve a score of 2.5 or lower. Gloves with an AQL higher than 4 or 5 are only acceptable for mechanical or industrial purposes. Rigorous AQL standards require glove manufacturers to employ uncompromising quality control. The AQL scoring guide helps ensure gloves used for medical purposes are without defects. Tears or other lapses in quality could leave healthcare professionals and their patients vulnerable to pathogens or other contaminants.

Medical gloves are generally disposable and they include examination gloves and surgical gloves. FDA reviews these gloves to ensure that performance criteria such as leak resistance, tear resistance and biocompatibility are met.

Examination Gloves vs. Surgical Gloves

Both surgical and exam gloves are medical-grade gloves for use during medical procedures. Medical exam gloves can be used for patient examinations and blood tests. These gloves are also used as general purpose gloves for managing incontinence, everyday spills and messes in and around the home.

Surgical gloves are used by surgeons and operating room nurses. These disposable gloves must meet higher quality standards, and are usually sterile since they are used for surgical procedures. Sterile gloves must have an acceptable quality level of 1.5 or lower. Surgical gloves offer better fit with more precise sizing, as well as higher tactile sensitivity.

What You Need to Consider When Procuring Your OEM Disposable Medical Grade Gloves

  • Know your glove material
  • Gloves related markings & certification - FDA 510K Certified with examination or medical grade
  • Know the AQL test result. Only choose disposable gloves that have an AQL of 2.5 or less
  • Beware of cheap gloves which may be reject clearance lines - you may be paying for glove failures
  • Only buy from reputable OEM suppliers with quality control procedures in place

When buying OEM disposable medical gloves, there are many different options available to suit different needs. The level of protection, comfort, durability and more all vary between the types of gloves, which include latex gloves, nitrile gloves and vinyl gloves. With so many choices, the decision can get overwhelming, so let’s break it down and get an idea of why there are so many different types, to begin with. Once you understand this, the process of buying or creating your private label medical gloves will be much easier.

Know The Material

Medical gloves are usually made from polymers such as latex, vinyl and nitrile, although you may find disposable gloves made of other materials, such as neoprene. These gloves come chlorinated, non chlorinated, un-powdered, or powdered to lubricate the gloves, making them easier to put on the hands.

Latex Gloves

Latex is a comfortable, inexpensive glove option suitable for most medical environments. They’ve been a staple of many healthcare facilities since 1980s. With that said, latex allergies are common and with a shorter shelf life compared to other materials. If you are procuring OEM medical grade gloves in large quantities for widespread use, you may want to consider a material less likely to cause allergic reactions, such as nitrile or vinyl.

Nitrile Gloves

Nitrile gloves are one of the best alternatives to latex gloves, offering a longer average shelf life. Standard nitrile gloves are an ideal non-sterile option. A powder free, latex free nitrile medical rated glove is resistant to chemicals, oils and acids. Nitrile’s strength makes these gloves tough and helps them stay puncture-free, even when worn for extended periods. If latex allergies are an issue, nitrile gloves offer a flexible, touch-sensitive alternative. You can buy bulk orders of nitrile gloves in a variety of colors and sizes.

Vinyl / Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Gloves

Another option is a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) glove. PVC is a common synthetic plastic polymer. Since they are easy to mass-produce, these gloves are one of the least expensive options. They are also less durable than other glove types, and they offer limited hazard protection. For that reason, PVC gloves are best suited for low-hazard applications. In some cases, a nitrile-vinyl blend glove may be the best choice for affordability and durability.

Now that we have a better understanding of the different materials of disposable gloves and their individual advantages, let's explore the more specific options available. Each one of these options is intended to provide specific benefits for different applications. In order to choose the right medical glove type for the intended use, it’s important to understand what these options are and their advantages.

Glove Finishing Options

Powdered Gloves vs. Powder-free Gloves

What are powdered gloves? Powdered gloves are usually lubricated with cornstarch, which makes them much easier to put on. They are more comfortable, offer a better grip and are easy to don. The cornstarch underneath the surface helps reduce discomfort and reduce sweating. Powdered gloves are popular within healthcare industry and are also fantastic in fast paced busy industries, making them well suited to hair & beauty, cleaning and hospital use (only when you aren't coming into contact with open wounds). They are a little more affordable too, making them ideal for any person looking to cut a few costs.

What are powder-free gloves? Non powdered gloves simply do not include cornstarch. Powder-free gloves are super strong offering more versatility than powdered gloves thanks to their oil, chemical and water resistance. Non powdered gloves are more skin friendly than powdered gloves, however you might find slight discomfort as they can cause you to sweat during the day.

Non-powdered gloves are better suited for mechanical industries such as engineering and mechanics as the gloves tend to be stronger and more versatile. As powder-free gloves come with a reduced contamination risk, these gloves are popular within the food industries and also often preferred for surgeries and other sensitive procedures.

Powder-free gloves can be more expensive due to the process that needs to be done to remove the powder coating from the glove. Powder-free gloves reduce the cause of allergies by lowering protein and chemical content. Powder-free medical grade gloves are ‘cleaner’ to use than powdered gloves, since they don’t leave any residue on clothing or other surfaces. Non-powdered gloves are recommended in healthcare and medical settings, since it avoids reactions with the alcohol-based hand rub in use within the health-care facilities.

Chlorinated Gloves vs. Non-chlorinated Gloves

If you choose to private label gloves that are powder-free, you’ll need to decide if you want to use chlorinated or non-chlorinated gloves.

Chlorinated gloves are powder-free gloves that are treated with chlorine to make them easy to put on. These gloves are also particle free to avoid allergic reactions caused by soluble proteins. Chlorinated gloves are more commonly used than non-chlorinated gloves, although some prefer gloves that have a more neutral color and less of an odor. Another disadvantage of chlorinated gloves is theirs shorter shelf life: after about a year, chlorinated gloves become brittle, and when exposed to heat, these gloves may last even less than a year.

Non-chlorinated gloves, on the other hand, are closer in color to regular exam gloves and contain no chlorine odor. However, these gloves are not very popular since they are hard to put on, and are not particle free, since a ‘gel coat’ of tiny gel/silicone particles is added to make them slightly easier to don.

Disposable gloves with an acceptable AQL rating come in a variety of materials. One of the first things you should consider is your glove material preference. Different glove materials are useful for different purposes, so it’s a good idea to learn about the available options before making your pair of OEM gloves.

Latex Gloves vs Latex Free Gloves

Latex gloves are often preferred by healthcare providers since they provide the best service when it comes to elasticity, comfort and fit. Surgeons in particular benefit from latex gloves as they are great for sensitive work, since they offer more precision with high tactile sensitivity.

Despite its advantages, latex gloves have become an issue for many health professionals due to the increasing rate of latex allergies, and many are choosing to go with non-latex glove options such as vinyl and nitrile gloves instead.

Vinyl gloves, which are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), are usually the cheapest latex-free gloves. However, many prefer to use higher-end gloves such as nitrile gloves.

Nitrile gloves are often preferred since these non-latex gloves best resemble the stretchy feel of latex gloves, and are also highly durable and puncture resistant.

Another factor to consider when deciding between latex and latex-free gloves is the protection offered by each type of material. Latex gloves offer the best protection against bacteria and viruses, while synthetic gloves provide better chemical protection. Of the different types of latex-free gloves, nitrile gloves offer a higher degree of protection against viruses, besides the chemical protection they provide.

Our glove's physical dimensions allow for an easy fit and comfortable wear for extended periods of time. Gloves that are too large decreases protection, whereas dimensions that are too snug will lead to reduced blood flow, thereby affecting comfort and dexterity. Choose the best fit and feel from our wide glove sizes from 80 to 120mm, ranging from S to XL.
